West Head Project (Jim Denley, Monica Brooks, Dale Gorfinkel) will present an outdoor performance on June 2 as part of Balance-Unbalance 2013, a major international conference designed to use art as a catalyst to explore intersections between nature, science, technology and society as we move into an era of both unprecedented ecological threats and transdisciplinary possibilities.

Balance-Unbalance 2013 is hosted by the UNESCO recognised Noosa Biosphere, a dynamic learning laboratory for sustainability in one of the most pristine and diverse environments in Australia. The three-day conference will take place May 31 to June 2, 2013 at Central Queensland University, with satellite events at Lake Cootharaba as part of the 2013 Floating Land Festival.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Sound and Vision explores the diverse field of contemporary sound sculpture by three emerging artists. Coinciding with the Brunswick Music Festival, the exhibition features immersive installations as well as optical works that explore the effects of light, movement and sound.  A range of materials including glass, spices and paper feature in a stimulating sensory experience that consider the connections between sound and vision.

Accompanying the exhibition is a public program featuring performance, workshops and sound walks in the neighbourhood.

Out Hear

The musicians of West Head Project, the Now now and Out Hear have been building culture around music outdoors in special and resonant spaces for over a decade. Locations of previous performances have included national parks, urban spaces, mountain tops, caves and islands around Australia. This 10 day musical pilgrimage down the South East Coast features Jim Denley (wind instruments), Monika Brooks (accordion), Dale Gorfinkel (modified trumpet), Sam Pettigrew (double bass), Laura Altman (clarinet) and Rishin Singh (trombone). They will play each day – finding music in unique outdoor spaces. “We hear the alien quality of the non-human in our music and the humanity of music in nature.” David Dunn, Nature Sound and the Sacred. Bring walking shoes, warm clothes, water & picnic snacks.

Sound Circus

Sound Circus is modelled on the traditional idea of a travelling circus, in which a dozen sound artists, performing or installing new and experimental music, explore the outback area known as ‘Corner Country’. This sonic odyssey will feature new and old technologies such as kite, fence, auto-drumming, and sonic sculpture projects intermingled with traditional instruments such as violin, double bass, vibraphone or clarinet in environmental contexts. The emphasis will be on live music that uses interactive technology, engages with the environment, and connects to the people who live in Corner Country.
Tour Dates: 6-19 September
Where: White Cliffs Arts Festival 6-9 September, Mutawintji National Park, Broken Hill School of The Air, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Cameron Corner, Innamicka, Strzelecki Track. They are joined by Dale, local instrument creator & balafon player. Solos, duos + trios.
